Mini Cupcake tower

I saw this cupcake tower awhile back at Shanty 2 Chic, sorry can't find the exact post but I know one of those talented sisters made this amazingly cute cupcake tower! Anyway a friend and I started planning a tea party for our girls and I thought I'd make a mini version for their cupcake tower for the tea party as a centerpiece.

Materials:

1 small hat box tops
1 medium hat box top (I found a set of boxes at Joanns that the boxes were damaged and they gave me 75% discount!)
E6000 glue (or similar type something that will hold very well! Not just a glue gun...)
2 3" wooden candlesticks
3 wooden footers
1 wooden finial
Paint of your choice
Sandpaper
Woodstain and/or brown paint
Mod Podge

Glue your footers to the bottom of your larger hat box top with your E6000.

Glue the 2 3" candlesticks small ends together with the same glue

Then glue them to the middle of the medium hat box top and the middle of the small hat box top bottom. Finally glue the wooden finial to the top of the small hat box top. Let set overnight to dry completely. If you start painting now and hold it by the middle candlesticks or top finial it may come apart....not that I would know!

You should have something that looks like this!

Now comes the fun part; painting!

I sprayed a coat of brown spray paint that I had leftover from another project all over so that when I sanded the top coat of paint off you'd see the brown underneath. After the brown I did 2 coats of a raspberry pink (from Michaels). Pretty but it needs a little something more!

So when that was all dry I sanded the edges in what I considered to be typical wear spots.

When I was happy with the sanding I added a coat of watered down wood stain. That wasn't dark enough so I added some brown paint to the mix. Just rub it on with an old cloth or scrap piece of fabric and then rub the excess off. Finally seal with a couple coats of mod podge!

Yes I know the hat box tops aren't quite straight but that just adds to the character right?! Oh well they were only $5 for the set of 5 hat boxes with lids! If you notice the bottom tier is lip side up and the top is lip side down...I did this on purpose because I thought it looked better that way but do whatever makes you smile :)

Next up a ruffled table cloth! What would a tea party be with out a table cloth? Why not add some ruffles!

Love, Jess

Really cute choice on the color, it came out so pretty! Genius thinking to use hat box lids, the rims really give this project a bit of presence. It turned out great!
